Branch Trail Takoma DC has been very active with long awaited revitalization and development in the heart of the community. The original Takoma Park railroad station, the heart of Takoma, sat just south of where the Metro station now stands in Takoma DC. Takoma DC has many wonderful original Victorian homes, including the magnificent Cady-Lee Mansion, as well as arts and crafts bungalows, brick colonials, charming condominiums, apartments and the new Takoma Village co-housing complex.
The Takoma DC Historic Preservation Committee has been actively involved in the ongoing development of a Small Area Plan for the downtown Takoma DC area including both revitalization and new development. We have met often with Russell Katz and Ron Eichner who are separate developers planning to add new buildings on Carroll Street across from the Metro station and on Cedar and Blair just west of the Metro station. We have also closely followed WMATA's stated plan to sell off most of the current Metro site for townhouse development and the related Takoma DC Central District Plan..
The DC Committee worked closely with DC Councilmember Adrian Fenty to include Takoma DC in pending legislation to provide owners of homes in historic districts with tax credits for renovations. A similar tax credit program is already in place in Maryland. Over the past year the DC Committee organized three public workshops focusing on preservation of historic homes in Takoma Park. The first workshop, in the Fall of 2000, had Steven Raisch, the then-head of the DC preservation office, and others. Read the Takoma Voice article about the Fall Workshop. That was followed in the Spring of 2001, with a workshop focused on how to research the history of a home including turn of the century census records. The third workshop, in the Fall of 2001, brought together speakers on historic preservation rules from both Maryland and DC: T. Luke Young, Architectural Historian for the DC Historic Preservation Division and Robin Ziek, Historic Preservation Planner for the Montgomery County Preservation Office. These are just a few of the many activities the DC Committee has been involved in over the last year.
