Analysis of the Proposed Takoma DC Alignments of the Metropolitan Branch Trail

The Metropolitan Branch Trail (MBT) is a major thoroughfare for non-motorized vehicles and pedestrians that will connect Silver Spring, Maryland to Union Station in Washington DC. It is being designed for heavy, multipurpose use by bicyclists, pedestrians, skateboarders, and skaters, and is described as a major commuting corridor and part of a "bicycle beltway." It will be a large, well-lit thoroughfare. Because the MBT is being located within an already developed community and conditions are not ideal, it will by necessity be a hybrid trail partly off-road and partly on-road, making use of adjacent or nearby sidewalks. One of its major corollary purposes is the revitalization of neighborhoods (WABA 1999, Metropolitan Branch Trail Concept Plan).

A portion of this major network will pass through the historic districts within the Takoma Park Maryland and DC communities. Five possible alignments for the portion of the MBT that passes through the Takoma DC historic district have been presented in a January 2003 report by the DC Department of Transportation (DDOT), entitled "Alignment Study: Takoma Area Corridor of Metropolitan Branch Trail." Since this report has been published, Eastern Alignment A is no longer possible because of the Katz revitalization project and has been eliminated from further consideration. The remaining alignments were selected by DDOT as viable alignments.
